BJP plans to move NHRC on SEZ
Staff Reporter
Kakinada: The BJP State unit will raise the issue of alleged violation of ‘democratic norms’ in the acquisition of land for Kakinada Special Economic Zone (KSEZ) at the party’s three-day national council meeting to be held in New Delhi from January 26.
The party would also approach the National Human Rights Commission seeking justice for farmers whose lands were being ‘forcibly’ acquired for the SEZ, BJP MLA and party floor leader in the Assembly G. Kishan Reddy said at a press conference here on Tuesday.
Harping on the alleged violation of human rights, Mr. Reddy recalled that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had promised during a debate in Parliament to avoid acquisition of fertile lands for SEZs. Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy had made a similar commitment in the Assembly. Despite their assurances, the official machinery had taken away arable lands in blatant violation of the new SEZ policy and strictures passed by the State Human Rights Commission, he alleged.
