ASSOCHAM ties up with Berhampur varsity

Special coaching centre for SC, ST students


Wokshops, seminars, would be regular mandatory features

300 scholarships for girl students launched


BERHAMPUR: The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) joined hands with the Berhampur University to open up a special coaching centre for SC and ST students in the campus.

This coaching centre meant for improving communication skills and personality of these students to meet the challenges of future was inaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Bijay Kumar Sahu. G.B. Panda, adviser to the Central Planning Commission and Ganjam district collector, V.K.Pandian were also present at the inaugural function presided by the PG council chairman of the university, B.B.Kar.

Communication skills

This special centre in the Berhampur University campus would operate for two three month sessions in a year.

The SC and ST post graduate students of the university would be enrolled in this centre. Fifty students have already enrolled.

Focus would be on development of communication skills and marketability attribute of students. Resource persons from the university and outside would be utilised by the centre.

Wokshops, seminars, discussions and mock interviews would be regular mandatory features for the students enrolling in it.

At present the Berhampur University has an intake capacity of 1086 students.

Out of it 141 seats (13%) are reserved for ST and 103 seats (9.5%) are reserved for the SC students. But during the 2007-08 sessions only 77 ST students and 60 SC students got themselves enrolled for courses in the university. The vacant seats had to be de-reserved to be filled up, which hints at need of remedial steps to enthuse more ST and SC students to take up higher studies.

The ASSOCHAM has recently taken up some initiatives for inclusive growth of SC and ST candidates even in the private sector.

The ASSOCHAM has recently launched 300 scholarships for girl students of ST and SC communities.

The newly inaugurated coaching centre in Berhampur University campus is one of the initiatives by the ASSOCHAM to promote SC and ST students in the country.
