Ooranis may be created under rural job scheme

Collector urges villagers to register themselves

No construction work can be undertaken

No machinery will be allowed: Collector

VIRUDHUNAGAR: Collector V. Chandrasekaran on Tuesday urged men and women seeking employment to register themselves under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (NREGP), which would be implemented from April 1.

At a training programme on the scheme for officials here, he said every family would be given jobs for a minimum of 100 days in a year. All those who had completed 18 years of age were eligible for work immaterial of whether they belonged to below poverty line families or not. They should register with their panchayat presidents in a white paper or through oral request. Every worker provided with an identity card should work for seven hours a day for which he/she would be paid Rs.80.

New ooranis could be created under the programme. Besides existing ooranis, tanks and temple tanks could be renovated and supply channels desilted. Other works that could be taken up under the scheme are road laying and works related to protection of soil and water resources.

However, no construction work could be undertaken and no construction materials should be brought under the scheme. Besides, no machinery would be allowed for implementing works.

Mr. Chandrasekaran said an allocation of Rs.10 lakh to Rs.15 lakh would be made in each panchayat for the programme. Each work should not be less than Rs.3 lakh and a group of 100 persons, including women, should be formed to implement the work.

Training programmes for panchayat presidents, makkal nala paniyalargal and panchayat assistants would be conducted at Sivakasi, Aruppukottai and Rajapalayam on January 12, 24 and 29
