UK-India education body announces awards

Special Correspondent

13 of them for science & technology and 24 for research

NEW DELHI: The UK-India Education & Research Initiative (UKIERI) has announced 81 awards in the field of science & technology and research. Britain and India have also agreed to support a further round of UKIERI awards designed to establish networking links between Indian and British education and research institutions, with the UK committing two million pounds over three years and the Department of Science and Technology agreeing to match this funding on a parity basis.

Launched in 2006, UKIERI is a five-year programme aimed at improving educational links between India and the UK. The awards that will be given during the second year of the initiative includes 13 science & technology awards, 24 collaborative research awards, nine collaborative programme delivery awards, 13 school cluster partnerships, 15 research fellowships and nine Ph.D. scholarships.

According to UKIERI Project Manager (India) Tim Gore, “UKIERI will ensure that both India and the UK benefit from the collaborations. Higher education institutes are competing on a global scale. This partnership between our two countries will ensure that our education systems are strengthened and increasingly global in outlook enabling both countries to better succeed in a global knowledge economy.”

UKIERI would also sign an MoU on the India-UK Higher Education Leadership Development Programme to develop higher education leadership in India and the UK by forming working partnerships. These partnerships would also contribute to the development and dissemination of good practice in higher education management and leadership in Indian and British higher education institutions, he added.
