HYDERABAD: Ahead of the “BC Garjana” at Warangal tomorrow, the Telugu Desam Party has sought 50 per cent reservation for Backward Classes in the Assembly and dared Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy to prove his sincerity by making way for a BC candidate.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, the party’s senior BC leaders, K. Yerran Naidu, Y. Ramakrishnudu, K. E. Krishnamurthy, C. Ramachandraiah, N. Kishtappa, R. Ramachandraiah, M. Laxminarayana and P. Yadagiri, said that since the Government has claimed that it has done wonders for the BCs during the last four years, it should also publish a white paper to prove it.

On its part, the TDP was prepared for a public debate on the schemes implemented by it for BC welfare when in power as against those by Congress now, they said, recalling how Dr. Reddy and other Ministers were busy announcing a slew of measures for BCs ever since “BC Garjana” was planned. The other demands to be raised in the ‘Garjana’ include issue of identification cards for all occupation-based castes within BCs, formation of separate finance corporations, housing and insurance schemes for them.

On the Congress demand that TDP should appoint a BC as its president, Mr. Ramakrishnudu countered by saying it was not the party post but the Chief Minister’s post that was important .

They said during the last four years, no person from the BCs got Constitutional or any key post as was the case during the TDP rule. From AP Public Service Commission chairmanship to Vice-Chanceller of Osmania and Andhra, TDP gave a number of key posts to BCs.

Warangal Staff Reporter adds: The TDP will hold its polit bureau meeting here on Wednesday at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) campus to discuss a comprehensive policy for BC welfare. The policy would be released later at the public meeting ‘BC Garjana’ at the Arts College premises by party president N. Chandrababu Naidu.

Senior leader T Devender Goud, who has already arrived in the town, went round the venue overseeing the arrangements. Party leaders K Srihari, E Dayakar Rao, R Prakash Reddy, B Venkateswarlu and others organised a massive and colourful rally with people in traditional attire.

Elaborate security

Senior party leader Yanamala Ramakrishnudu arrived in the town in the afternoon and other leaders were expected to arrive late in the night . The police were making elaborate security arrangements to ensure free flow of vehicular traffic .
