HC adjourns plea against speed governors
Staff Reporter
BANGALORE: A single judge of the Karnataka High Court on Tuesday referred to a Division Bench two petitions filed against the State Government for making it mandatory for transport vehicles to install speed governors.
The Lorry Owners’ Association and Canara Bus Operators’ Association had filed petitions before the court challenging the decision of the Government on speed governors.
The petitioners submitted that no other State had made it mandatory for the transport vehicles to install speed governors. They said apart from them, owners of maxi-cabs, luxury taxis, and private buses had been asked to install speed governors. They wanted the rule to be scrapped, saying that it was discriminatory and that it would affect them.
The rule notified by the State Government in June last came into force from January 1. The petitioners said the sped governors cost Rs. 15,000 in Karnataka whereas they were being sold for Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 3,000 in other States.
They questioned the rational of the State in making speed governors mandatory saying that no useful purpose would be served.
