MCD budget estimates cross Rs. 5,000 crore

Staff Reporter

“Substantial revenue generated last year so no new taxes”

Escrow Account for special projects started

No fee from MCD school students

NEW DELHI: To commemorate the golden jubilee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, its budget estimates for the coming financial year have been put at over Rs.5,000 crore.

At a special meeting of the MCD Standing Committee on Tuesday, Chairman Vijender Gupta said that despite no new taxes being levied on the public, the civic body had generated “substantial revenue” in the past year.

“An ‘Escrow Account for Special Projects’ has been started. A sum of Rs.500 crore will be deposited in this account that will be used to implement engineering projects. Of this Rs.500 crore, Rs.200 crore will be used for developing parking facilities across Delhi, Rs.236 crore for developing roads (Rs.75 crore for urban roads, Rs.25 crore for rural roads and Rs.136 crore for internal roads).

Mr. Gupta said studies had revealed that a major reason for increasing drop-outs from municipal schools was the fee imposed on students. “To check drop-outs from our schools, we have decided not to charge any fee from students. In fact, the civic body will even pay up Rs.4.5 crore from its coffers for the ‘boy’ fund.”

Keeping in mind the upcoming Commonwealth Games in 2010, the civic body had already readied over 40,000 saplings to beautify the city. A project termed “Face-lifting of roundabouts” is also on the cards, he added.
