Sheila interfering in MCD affairs: Mayor

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Mayor Arti Mehra on Friday brushed aside Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit’s “interference” in the working of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi saying that the civic body had been constituted by an Act of Parliament and bestowed with certain specific responsibilities.

Criticising the formation of the Delhi Parks and Garden Society by the Delhi Government without MCD’s knowledge, Ms. Mehra said: “Before going to the media, Ms. Dikshit should have talked to us to ascertain the factual position. It is preposterous to assume that we have made no contribution towards increasing the green cover of the city.”The Mayor also criticised the Chief Minister’s statement that the MCD was able to utilise only 30 per cent of its funds. “As per records, we have already used over 70 per cent of our fund. In fact, it is the Delhi Government that is out to throttle the civic body by depriving it of its rightful funds. If these are released in time, we would be able to take better care of civic services.”

According to Ms. Mehra, the civic body is taking care of 14,596 parks and gardens spread over 5,500 acres. “The MCD is an autonomous body created by an Act of Parliament and any effort to undermine its autonomy will be strongly resisted. As per the Act, maintenance of parks and gardens is an obligatory function of the MCD.”
