Spread of bird flu from West Bengal ruled out
Special Correspondent
BANGALORE: The H5N1 virus (which is the virus that caused bird flu) spreads through air.
Secretary of the Mysore Amateur Naturalists Manu Krishnamurthy says southern States will never get the virus from West Bengal as there are no bird migratory routes connecting West Bengal and Karnataka.
Migratory geese that are believed to be the carriers of the virus come from the northern parts of Himalayas to the southern States, and also from Afghanistan.
It is a myth, says Mr. Krishnamurthy, that a person can get infected by the consumption of chicken.
The virus can only be transferred to people while handling infected birds.
