Coimbatore: Union Minister of State for Law K. Venkatapathy on Tuesday asked lawyers to develop their professional skills.

Speaking at a function organised by the Coimbatore Bar Association, Mr.Venkatapathy said that lawyers should first realise and understand that they were dealing with cases brought to them by a layman who has no understanding of law.

Lawyers should explain their clients the nuances of law and the resultant legal implications. Lawyers were also duty bound to enlighten the presiding officers on the latest case laws and rulings of the High Courts and apex courts based on which the lawyers were making a plea for an order.

Lawyers, especially the younger generation, should never expect cases to come to them just because they had graduated in law.

They should develop their proficiency in language, understanding of the law and interpretation skills.

They should identify an area where they would like to focus and specialise depending on the skills, talents and capabilities and lawyers should stop the practice of looking at cases for a day or a month’s livelihood. Lawyers should learn and practice to present their case and arguments better.

Refresher course

He exhorted senior lawyers and doyens of the bar to conduct refresher courses for new entrants. Lawyers time and again have proved that they could play a crucial role in bringing about changes in any sphere of life.

He asked who were well off to conduct cases free of cost for the poor and needy and also few cases in the interest of society.

The District Sessions Judge, G. Chockalingam, president of the Bar Association, K.M. Dhandapani and the secretary, M. Kadirvel spoke on the occasion.
