LUCKNOW: Hot on the heels of the Uttar Pradesh Government’s denial of starvation deaths in the drought-hit Bundelkhand region of the State, instructions have been sent out to the District Magistrates to ensure that the drought relief fund is being properly utilised. The DMs have been asked to regularly monitor the drought relief work and ensure that the money is being paid to the farmers by the banks. The State Government has released Rs.151 crore for distribution among the affected people of the seven districts of Bundelkhand. These directives to the DMs of Jhansi, Jalaun, Lalitpur, Mahoba, Hamirpur, Banda and Chitrakoot have been issued by State Principal Secretary (Revenue) Pankaj Agarwal following complaints of disbursement of money to the farmers being delayed. Taking a serious view of the delay, Mr. Agarwal said along with the distribution of cheques the officials have to ensure that money is drawn from the banks. The Principal Secretary has directed the DMs to send a detailed report to the Government on the money distributed to the farmers. The district officials have been instructed to help the farmers in opening their bank accounts. Mr. Agarwal said immediate relief to the drought-hit farmers was the main objective of the fund. Last week the Government had denied starvation deaths in Bundelkhand, which had received below sub-normal rainfall in the last four years. The Government’s denial followed allegations by the Congress Party that nearly 200 farmers had died of starvation in the last eight months in Bundelkhand. A Government spokesman said some deaths had been reported from the region but these were on account of illness, debts and economic hardship. On the contrary, the State Government has blamed the Central Government for the critical situation in Bundelkhand. It has said that the delay in approving the Rs.80,000 crore special area incentive package sent to the Centre has aggravated the problem in the region. On her part, Chief Minister Mayawati announced a Rs.1600- crore relief package on January 15. Besides, she also announced the setting up of food grains bank and community kitchens in the drought-hit Bundelkhand.
