DEHRA DUN: Lt. Gen. T. K. Sapru, GOC-in-C, Western Command, on Tuesday called upon officers and men to uphold the high respect enjoyed by the Army and make it a point to continuously upgrade their skills to effectively tackle the threats and challenges posed by the enemy and terrorists.
Speaking at a colourful Western Command Investiture Ceremony- 2008 at the Golden Key Auditorium here, Gen. Sapru advised the officers to ensure quality training to keep the boys fit at all times. Loud clapping rent the air as the Commander gave away 12 Sena Medals (Gallantry), 11 Sena Medals (Distinguished) and 11 Vishisht Sewa Medals to officers and jawans of the Army.
Sewa Medal (Gallantry) was awarded posthumously to Grenadier Virendra Singh who laid down his life fighting terrorists in Poonch. Despite being critically injured, he pulled out a civilian held captive by the terrorists and kept firing at them till the very end. The medal was received by his widow, Geeta Devi.
A large number of Army and Air Force officers and civilian dignitaries attended the ceremony.
Bharti Singh, president of the Army Wives’ Welfare Association 2 Corps, enquired about the welfare measures extended to Ms. Geeta Devi and gave her a gift.
