Conviction of fake doctor confirmed

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court refused to show any mercy to a fake doctor and confirmed his conviction and sentence by a lower court.

The doctor, Multani Pasha, claimed that he was a homoeopathy doctor practising in and around several villages of Humnabad taluk in Bidar district.

In his appeal before the High Court, Pasha claimed that Ratnu of Bidar had died after he was given an injection. But, he claimed that he was not at fault and alleged that Ratnu might have consumed intoxicants after taking the injection or that he might have taken treatment on an empty stomach. He said he was in no way responsible for Ratnu’s death.

Opposing his appeal, the State claimed that Pasha was arrested after Ratnu’s wife lodged a police complaint. It said there are witnesses to prove that Ratnu collapsed soon after he was given an injection. It said Pasha once again injected Ratnu with a medicine, following which Ratnu died.

The State said the District and Sessions Judge of Bidar had on February 8, 2002, sentenced Pasha to two years rigorous life imprisonment and also a fine. It urged the court against commuting Pasha’s sentence. Justice V. Jagannathan confirmed the sentence and conviction and rejected Pasha’s appeal.

Acquitted

A Division Bench headed by Justice K. Sreedhar Rao on Tuesday, acquitted Rangabhairaya alias Dodda Pappa who was sentenced to undergo imprisonment for allegedly raping a girl on November 28, 2003, between Thimmegowdanahalli and Bidangere villages in Kunigal taluk of Tumkur district.

Rangabhairaya was arrested on January 20, 2004, and subsequently found guilty by a lower court. He had appealed against the verdict before the High Court.

The Bench acquitted Rangabhairaya.
