dated January 23, 1958: Nuclear arms

Dr. Konrad Adenauder, West German Chancellor, said on January 21 in a letter to Marshal Nikolai Bulganin, the Soviet Prime Minister, that the production of atomic weapons should be renounced.

Dr. Adenauer said it seemed to him of decisive significance to deal not with the question of where atomic weapons should be stored but with the fundamental question of renouncing the production of these weapons.

Dr. Adenauer said that the West German Government fully adopted President Eisenhower’s proposals made in a letter to Marshal Bulganin.

These, he said, were that there should be an agreement that outer space should be used for peaceful purpose alone, an agreement to end the unlimited production of nuclear weapons and for the final abandonment of nuclear weapons tests, and that the possibilities should be examined of an effective control over such measures.
