Letters to the Editor
One cannot help but agree with the author of ‘Will war lead to peace in Sri Lanka?” (Jan. 21) when he points to “the bloody futility of war.” As pointed out, regardless of whether it ends up in a stalemate or victory for either the Sri Lankan Government or the LTTE, the truth is that there cannot be just peace in the region, unless both parties give up their stubborn attitude. Both parties should work towards setting up a federal system of governance in the island nation, which seems the only feasible route to peace. For, as H G Wells once famously said: “If we don’t end war, war will end us.” Seriene Mohammed, Thiruvananthapuram Disarming by the LTTE, demilitarisation of the conflict-hit parts of the country, and post-war reconstruction of the shattered lives of both the Tamil and Sinhala communities are the only course for a state of peace to prevail in the war-torn island. Truly, the Sri Lankans deserve another chance for lasting peace. The country’s friends in the region and elsewhere should help restore peace. Y. Jagannatham, Vijayawada
