Forest fires in Idukki, Kollam

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Forest fires have started in several parts of Idukki district following the onset of summer.

Fires devastated some areas of Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary.

Fires have also been reported from Vallakkadavu near Thekkady.

Fires destroyed some areas of Marayur adjoining the Eravikulam National Park and Thenmala in Kollam district.

Susceptible areas

There are yet no reports of fire from Kurinjimala, Peppara and Wayanad sanctuaries.

However, these areas are considered to susceptible.

Kurnjimala Sanctuary has areas on the Tamil Nadu border where practically abandoned plantations increase the risk of fire.

Minister’s directive

Forest Minister Benoy Viswom had directed officials in December 2007 to step up fire protection measures with the participation of Vana Samrakshana Samithis (VSS) and Eco development Committees (EDC).

However, measures taken so far are proving to be ineffective. Enough watchers were yet to be posted in several areas.
