CPI(M) State meet to host seminars, exhibitions

State meet in Kottayam from February 11 to 14

Prakash Karat to inaugurate the meet


KOTTAYAM: Several seminars, exhibitions, art and sports contests and cultural programmes are being organised to mark the State conference of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) being held here from February 11 to 14.

Vaikom Viswan, organising committee chairman and Left Democratic Front convener, and CPI(M) district secretary K.J. Thomas told a news conference here on Tuesday that preparations were apace to make the first-ever State conference of the party in Kottayam a memorable event.

The conference will be inaugurated by party general secretary Prakash Karat at the Mammen Mappilla Hall, named T.K. Ramakrishnan Nagar.

Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, party State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan and the Polit Bureau members S. Ramachandran Pillai, Sitaram Yechury, R. Umanath and Brinda Karat will attend the inaugural and delegate sessions.

The conference will conclude with a massive red volunteers’ rally.

Flag day

“Flag day” was observed in the district on Saturday to signal commencement of the programmes forming part of the State conference. Flags were hoisted in the houses of 17,000-odd party workers spread over 110 local committees and 12 area committees in the district. The State level “flag day” is on Thursday.

The district-level seminars will begin on February 4 with a seminar on “Indian politics and Left governments” to be inaugurated by Mr. Achuthanandan. Mr. Viswan will be the moderator at the seminar. Labour Minister P.K. Gurudasan will inaugurate an all- India industrial exhibition being organised at the Nagampadam Indoor Stadium in connection with the State conference from February 5 to 17.

M.S. Swaminathan, agriculture scientist, will inaugurate a seminar on “Agricultural sector: crisis and solutions” at Thirunakkara Maidan, named EMS Nagar, on February 6. K. Varadarajan, Polit Bureau member, will be the moderator.

Metropolitan Philipose Mar Chrysostum will inaugurate a seminar on “Secularism and religion-based politics” on February 7. On the same day, Local Self-Government Minister Paloli Mohammed Kutty will inaugurate an agricultural fair. Fisheries Minister S. Sarma will inaugurate an exhibition of historical photographs. The fair and the exhibition will continue till February 14.

On February 8, Seema Mustafa, senior journalist, will inaugurate a seminar on “Undercurrents in the media.” V.V. Dakshinamoorthy, Editor, Deshabhimani, will be the moderator.

On February 9, Brinda Karat, Polit Bureau member, will inaugurate a seminar on “Indian women: yesterday, today and tomorrow” at “EMS Nagar.” Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy will be the moderator.

Public rally

The flag-hoisting ceremony will take place at P. Krishna Pillai Nagar (Nehru Stadium), the venue of the public rally, on February 10 evening. Torches to be brought from the martyrs’ column at Vayalar will be installed at the stadium the same evening.

Mr. Yechury will inaugurate a seminar on “Indo-U.S. nuclear deal: controversy and reality” on February 11 evening. Suresh Kurup, MP, will be the moderator.

Mr. Karat will inaugurate a seminar on “Contemporary relevance of Marxism” on February 12. Sukumar Azhikode, critic, will inaugurate a cultural meeting on February 13. Education Minister M.A. Baby will be the moderator.

Mr. Viswan and Mr. Thomas said several cultural programmes would be organised in connection with the conference.
