MYSORE: Unseeded Vinod Gowda of Karnataka stunned the third seed, S. Kamal 7-5, 6-3 and entered the quarterfinals of the boys’ under-18 singles in the Shafi Darashah-AITA Championship Series junior tennis championship conducted by Raghuveer Tennis Club here on Tuesday. A spate of unforced backhand errors cost Kamal dearly, who fought spiritedly in the first set levelling 4-all after trailing 2-4. However, Vinod Gowda, who was lot more consistent with his returns broke his rival again in the 11th game to wrap up the set. Gowda kept up the momentum in the second set which saw several absorbing rallies. Gowda grabbed a 4-2 lead and closed the set at 6-3. Another upsetIn another upset, Pradeep K Reddy of Andhra Pradesh beat fifth seeded Jaisal Kohil Mariwala of Maharashtra 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(0). Top seeded Siram Gautham of A.P. and second seeded M.A. Naveen of Tamil Nadu also made the last eight round. In the girls’ section, top seed Bhavani Shankar of Tamil Nadu led the way to the quarterfinals. Other main qualifiers were second seeded Teertha Iska of A.P., Raveena Shetty of Karnataka, Soumya Pulumati of A.P. and Rachana R. Gowda of Karnataka. Teerthi Iska also entered the quarterfinals of the girls’ under-12 singles. Kadiravan scored twice for the host while Sunil Yadav’s 21st minute helped Punjab to reduce the margin. In the other semifinal, West Bengal defeated Kerala 4-1 through tie-breaker. Gopal Das, Rajat Biswas, Pankaj Pal and Sanjib Ghosh scored for West Bengal while Ubadulla found the target for Kerala. The final will be held on Wednesday afternoon. Vijay Punjabi winsVijay Punjabi won the KSTBA Tenpin bowling championship at the Starcity centre here recently. In the final, Vijay Punjabi defeated Sethu Madhavan by 80 pins. Unbeaten 131 by AnupBasel Mission English Medium High School (Dharwad) defeated JSS High School (Dharwad) by 181 runs in the KSCA under-15 inter-schools tournament at the SDM Dental College ground in Dharwad on Monday. Batting first, BMEMHS piled up 303 for five in 40 overs with Anup Ammannavar making an unbeaten 131. In reply, JSS was shot out for 122.
