THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: SB College (Changanassery) will meet Mar Ivanios College ‘A’ in the final of the Mar Ivanios Trophy inter-collegiate basketball tournament. In the semifinals, SB College overcame Sree Kerala Varma College (Thrissur) 107-102, while Mar Ivanios beat LNCPE (Kariyavattom) 77-49. The results: SB College, Changanassery 107 (Deepumon 37, Nirmal K. Mathew 26, Anu Mohan Das 21) bt SKVC, Thrissur 102 (Eudrick Pereira 25, Amal James 24, Geo 18). Cosmos posts winCosmos CC defeated Cricket Club of Kerala by five wickets in the Thiruvananthapuram district ‘E’ division cricket league here on Tuesday. Chess tournamentThe 14th YMCA all-Kerala prize money chess tournament will be held at the YMCA hall in Thiruvananthapuram from January 25 to 27. National gymnasticsThe 48th National senior gymnastics championship was inaugurated by the Kerala Sports Minister, M. Vijayakumar, at the Jimmy George indoor stadium here on Tuesday. The minister declared the five-day event open in a colourful opening ceremony. The KSSC president, T.P. Dasan, presided. A demonstration by six selected gymnasts on each of the six apparatuses followed. The team preliminaries will get underway on Wednesday. Shoban qualifiesTamil Nadu’s Shoban Babu and Kerala’s G. Chandu won their final qualifying round matches on Tuesday evening and gained berths in the men’s main draw of the Lotus Trophy all-India tennis tournament at Kochi. C.P. Sudhakara Prasad, Advocate-General, inaugurated the tournament. The main draw matches begin on Wednesday at the Lotus Club and Regional Sports Centre courts. Aluva Veterans beats Fort KochiContinuing the trend in the ongoing Mar Athanasious Trophy all-India schools tournament here, Aluva Veterans defeated Fort Kochi Veterans 6-5, in sudden death, in an exhibition football match at the Municipal Stadium, Aluva, on Tuesday evening. The teams were goalless at the end of the regulation period. The match is a regular feature during the Athanasious Trophy which is organised by the former footballers of Aluva. The seventh Athanasious Trophy, which has seen a good number of games ending in the tiebreaker this year, concludes on Wednesday evening with the final between Rosary HSS (Navelim, Goa) and Kolkata’s L.V. Adarsha Vidyalaya HSS. Basketball tournamentThe Carmel Trophy all-India basketball tournament begins at the St Antony’s floodlit stadium here on Wednesday. The tournament will be an inter-collegiate affair in the men’s section and an open event in the women’s. The Carmel Club had planned to make the event a collegiate affair in both the sections but since the women’s varsities championship is on at Nellore, the host was forced to change its plans. Chennai’s Loyola College, St. Joseph’s (Bangalore) and Fr. Agnus (Mumbai) will be the three outstation teams in the men’s section which will be a league-cum-knockout affair. Mar Ivanios (Thiruvananthapuram), Sree Kerala Varma (Thrissur) and St. Berchmans (Changanassery) complete the line-up. The teams have been divided into two groups with the top two progressing to the semifinals. The women’s event will be a four-team league involving Central Railway (Mumbai), Eastern Railway (Kolkata), South Eastern Railway (Hubli) and KSEB (Thiruvananthapuram). The tournament ends on January 27. Men’s groupings: Group A: Fr. Agnus (Mumbai), St. Joseph’s (Bangalore), Mar Ivanios (Thiruvananthapuram). Group B: Loyola (Chennai), Sree Kerala Varma (Thrissur), St Berchmans (Changanassery). Rahul strikes 118Rahul Raveendran struck an unbeaten 118 to guide Valiant to the final of the Kannur District ‘B’ Division cricket league at Thalassery on Tuesday. The scores (semifinal): Valiant 178 for 9 in 35 overs (Rayiz 53) lost to Friends CC 183 for 5 in 30 overs (Rahul Raveendran 118 not out). Thyagarajar Polytechnic winsThyagarajar Polytechnic, Thrissur, beat Govt. Polytechnic, Thirurangadi, 3-1 to win the all-Kerala inter-polytechnic table tennis championship, at Kozhikode. In badminton, Maharajas Technological Institute triumphed, beating GPTC, Attingal.
