Centre to foot 90 per cent of the implementation cost To focus on water conservatio and land development THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (NREGP) will be implemented in Thiruvananthapuram district from April 1. This was decided at a meeting convened at the Collectorate here on Monday. Under the programme, all adults in rural areas of the district willing to undertake unskilled work will be assured of a minimum of 100 days of work a year. While the Central government will foot 90 per cent of the implementation cost, the State government will bear the remaining amount. The State government will have to provide unemployment dole if an applicant is not given work within 15 days of application. There will be no gender discrimination in wages. The programme focuses on conservation of water and development of land. The District Collector will be the programme coordinator. The scheme is to be implemented through gram panchayats. Presiding over the function, district panchayat president Anavoor Nagappan sought the cooperation of district-level officials to ensure that the implementation of NREGP is free of corruption. Varkala Radhakrishnan, MP, Additional District Magistrate Sivarajan Nadar, district panchayat vice-president B.P. Murali and officials participated in the meeting.
