Woman’s suicide: kin stage protest
Special Correspondent
TAMBARAM: Relatives of a 24-year-old woman who allegedly committed suicide in East Tambaram on Monday, staged a protest at the Tambaram Taluk Government Hospital (Chromepet GH) on Tuesday, accusing the Selaiyur police of being slack in investigating the case.
Suguna allegedly hanged herself in her house on Murugesan Street, East Tambaram. Daughter of Narayanan, a caterer in Otteri village near Vandalur, she got married in 2006.
Stating that Suguna had committed suicide, unable to bear the alleged dowry harassment by her in-laws, her relatives gathered in large numbers outside the hospital on Tuesday. They accused the Selaiyur police of going soft on her in-laws. They said they would not move from the spot until Suguna’s in-laws were arrested. P.Seetharaman, Chengalpattu Sub-Collector, who in his capacity as the Revenue Divisional Officer had initiated a probe, pacified the agitated relatives of the deceased woman. Senior police officials said a thorough probe would be conducted and suspects would not escape.
Later, the police said that they have arrested Umapathy, 26-year-old husband of Suguna and Kalimuthu, his father. A search is on for Umapathy’s mother Kamala. The diary maintained by Suguna was in police custody, a senior officer said. Only after this assurance, did the relatives receive Suguna’s body for cremation.
