Acquittal in grenade attack case challenged
Special Correspondent
Matter adjourned for two weeks “Trial court relied on minor lapses committed by prosecution”
CHENNAI: The acquittal of eight suspected Al Umma cadres in a case of grenade attack on an Inspector of Police has been challenged in the Madras High Court.
When the appeal, preferred by the Special Investigation Team of the CB-CID, Coimbatore, came up before Justice M. Jeyapaul on Tuesday, he admitted the plea and ordered notices to the respondents.
The matter has been adjourned by two weeks.
According to the CB-CID, the youths targeted Inspector Murali who played an active role in investigating the murder of constable Selvaraj and communal violence cases in Coimbatore. On June 4, 1998, the accused hurled hand grenade on the officer, who escaped the attack. A case for offences such as conspiracy, attempt to murder etc., in addition to offences under the Explosives Act was registered.
On October 15, 2007, the Special Court for Bomb Blast Cases at Poonamallee acquitted all the accused.
In the present appeal, the CB-CID contended that the trial court had relied on insignificant and minor lapses committed by the prosecution and that the order was liable to be set aside.
