Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Nearly a decade after the death of Sarika Shah in an incident of eve-teasing, the Madras High Court has commenced hearing on the appeals of nine persons found guilty and sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for five years.

Justice S.K. Krishnan adjourned the matter to January 29. According to the prosecution, the victim and her friends were walking on Ethiraj College Road here on July 18, 1998, when a gang in an autorickshaw, returning from a Youth Congress meeting, harassed them by sprinkling water from sachets. When one of the accused jumped off the vehicle and fell on Sarika Shah, she fell down sustaining injuries and later succumbed to the injuries.

The Egmore police registered a case.
