Vikram Reddy crashes out

Principal Correspondent

KOLKATA: The top seed B. Vikram Reddy lost to unseeded New Zealander Ben MacLachlan in the second round of the ONGC ITF junior tournament at the DKS Complex clay courts here on Tuesday. Ben’s seventh-seeded brother Riki also moved up. Vikram, who had crashed out in the opening round of the Gurgaon event, lost a long battle that lasted two hours and 11 minutes. After surrendering the first set, the Indian came back strongly in the second to level the match.

The third set went with serve till the tiebreaker but Vikram committed too many unforced errors in the tiebreaker to lose 0-7.

The second-seeded David Agung Susanto of Indonesia joined Vikram on the sidelines, losing to India’s Vinay Kamineni. The unseeded Vinay won the crucial points to get past Susanto in straight sets.

Sudanwa Sitaram, the third seed, clawed back from the brink of defeat. Qualifier Mohit Mayur had set points in both sets, but Sudhanwa, who won the ITF grade II event at Gurgaon, came up with some superb returns to prevail in two tiebreakers 7-6(2), 7-6(4). The fourth-seeded Christopher Marquis and fifth-seeded Chandril Sood also progressed to the quarterfinals.
