Zimbabwean held with heroin

Devesh K. Pandey

The woman was allegedly trying to smuggle out consignment

Her body language raised suspicion; substance was hidden in false bottom of suitcase

Says she was promised a handsome commission for taking the consignment from Delhi

NEW DELHI: A 26-year-old Zimbabwean woman allegedly trying to smuggle out a consignment of 2 kg heroin has been arrested by the Customs at Indira Gandhi International Airport here. This is probably the first time a consignment of heroin destined for an African country has been intercepted at the airport.

The young woman was on her way to board an Ethiopian Airlines flight for Harare via Addis Ababa on Tuesday when she was intercepted by the Customs sleuths in the check-in area through spot profiling. Her body language raised suspicion and a proper inspection of her stroller-suitcase revealed that it had a false bottom in which 2 kg of neatly packed white powdery substance was found. The stuff turned out to be fine-quality heroin probably of Afghan origin.

Subsequently the woman was taken into custody. During interrogation, she identified herself as Belinda Mabheka, a resident of Harare. She purportedly disclosed that some people recently approached her back in Harare and offered her a handsome commission for bringing a consignment of drugs from Delhi. The drug dealers had made all the arrangements for her travel and stay in the Capital.

The woman came to the Capital this past week and was contacted by some West African nationals who delivered the consignment of heroin to her, said the police quoting her.

She expressed her inability to identify the place where she was handed over the packet as she was new to the city. She had come to India for the first time.

She has been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

The seizure has substantiated the suspicion of drug enforcement agencies here that Afghan heroin, which is smuggled into the country mainly via the India-Pakistan border along Punjab, is now being diverted to the United States and European countries via Africa.
