Basheer birth centenary at Public Library

KOCHI: When the whole world is celebrating the birth centenary of the Sultan of Malayalam short story Vaikom Mohammed Basheer, can the Ernakulam Public Library be left behind?

The library is joining hands with the District Library Council, Centre for Heritage, Environment and Development (C-HED) and the Kochi Corporation to organise competitions based on the wide world of literature created by the master. On January 26, short story and essay competitions will be held at the Public Library hall. The participants are expected to write an appreciation of either Balyakalasakhi or Ntuppuppakoranendaarnnu.

There will be a reading competition the next day. Participants can choose stories from the rich repertoire of Basheer literature.

On February 9, a caricature competition will be held at the Children’s Park. Participants are allowed to select characters by Basheer for their caricature.

On February 10, an elocution competition will be held at the Public Library.

Subjects for the elocution are women characters of Basheer and social reforms in Basheer works (on the basis of his works Mathilukal, Balyakala Sakhi, Anarghanimisham and Pathummayude Aadu). This will be followed by a quiz based on Basheer’s stories.

The competitions are open for students of high school and college and for the public. Details of the competitions are available at 2355491 or 2351894. Winners will be given awards at the valedictory function to be held at the Town Hall on February 28.
