Heritage Club inaugurated at Haveri college

A piece of advice: Venkatesh Machakanur, Commissioner of the Department of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage, speaking after inaugurating the ‘Heritage Club’ at G.H. College in Haveri on Wednesday.

HAVERI: Venkatesh Machakanur, Commissioner of the Department of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage, has said that apart from the symbols of heritage such as temples, stupas and other structures, natural heritage was also facing a threat.

Mr. Machakanur was speaking after inaugurating a Heritage Club established by the Department of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage, Bangalore, and KLE Society’s Gudleppa Hallikeri College here on Wednesday.

Mr. Machakanur said that natural heritage also faced a threat. Reckless misuse of natural resources had affected ecological balance, he said

Natural heritage and cultural heritage had to be preserved, he added.

The younger generation had a greater responsibility on them, especially with regard to the conservation of ancient monuments and temples, the commissioner said.

Elaborating on the objectives of the heritage club, Mr. Machakanur said that apart from students and general public, respective gram panchayats would also be involved in conservation activities.

‘Protect monuments’

Sulochana Potnis, Deputy Director of Department of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage, Dharwad, underscored the need for students to join hands with the department in the protection of ancients temples and monuments. “The Government alone cannot do much in this regard,” she said.

D.G. Kulkarni, lecturer, S.R.N. Arts and M.B.S. Commerce College, Bagalkot, delivered a lecture on conservation of heritage.

Principal of G.H. College B.S. Gavi presided over the function.
