Chandigarh-Mohali metro crosses a signal

Special Correspondent

CHANDIGARH: Haryana Chief Secretary Promilla Issar said on Wednesday that the State Government had given its in-principle approval to the metro railway project for the Chandigarh-Panchkula-Mohali area in the first phase, which could be extended further in later phases.

Addressing her customary Wednesday Press conference, she said the metro project would be successful if the bus services in the tri-city were made more efficient and these virtually reached the doorsteps of the people to avoid their travelling even to the metro station in their own vehicles.

At a meeting of the Chief Secretaries of Punjab and Haryana and the Adviser of Chandigarh Administration on the metro project last week, it was decided that in the first phase all these three major cities would be covered and in the second phase this facility would be extended to the nearby areas.

The Chief Secretary said she had suggested that a ring road be constructed on the periphery of Chandigarh on the pattern of New Delhi as it would help people from Panchkula and other entry points of periphery.
