This Day That Age
The United Nations Security Council on January 22 unanimously adopted an Anglo-American resolution aimed at settling the dispute between Jordan and Israel over the no-man’s land near Jerusalem. The Council, meeting for the first time this year, called on Israel to stop planting trees in the Mount Mukkaber neutral zone, south of Jerusalem. The resolution, framed as a result of a Jordanian complaint, also called on both sides to co-operate with the United Nations in observing demarcation lines and removing military installations from the area. The draft was introduced by Mr. Henry Cabot Lodge, United States, who said it was intended to strengthen U.N. authority in the area and contribute to the establishment of peace. The resolution endorsed the recommendation of the acting United Nations’ Chief of Staff in the area Lieutenant Colonel Byron Leary that Israel and Jordan should discuss through the Mixed Armistice Commission “civilian activities” in the zone.
