Raman pleased with performance of juniors

Special Correspondent

Chennai: W.V. Raman is pleased with the India under-19 team’s performance in South Africa. The side clinched the tri-nation one-day series featuring the host and Bangladesh as the other teams and won the two-‘Test’ series against South Africa 1-0.

Raman, who coached the side, told The Hindu on Wednesday, “The boys displayed individual and collective awareness, situational reading of the game and executed the plans. They showed maturity that exceeded their age.”

India won all its four games in the league phase apart from the final aganst Bangladesh.

“The boys were calm and poised in tricky situations. We were 77 for four in 22 overs in the final with the last recognised pair at the crease. We recovered to make 260.”

Raman said batsmen Virat Kohli, Manish Pandey, Abhinav Mukund and Sourav Tiwary impressed.

The coach believes left-arm paceman Pradeep Sangwan has the potential to excel in a higher level of the game.

Left-arm spinning all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja could be handy in the game’s shorter version, he feels.

India dominated the two-Test series where openers Abhinav Mukund and Srivatsav Goswami provided the side sound starts.

“The first ‘Test’ was played on a pitch with seam movement and bounce. The youngsters coped well. There were interruptions due to rain and this tested the concentration levels of the players. They responded well,” said Raman.

India could have made it 2-0 had not inclement weather cut into play in the second ‘Test.’
