Plural expressions of the feminine
In ‘trance’: Odissi dancer Alpana Nayak.
“Vichitravarna” is an expression of womanhood through Odissi dance evolved at Nritya Sangeet Kala Mandir in Orissa. Danseuse Alpana Nayak is now set to give her solo Odissi performance on “Vichitravarna -- Six Facets of Womanhood” at India International Centre in the Capital on Sunday.
Through the composition, Alpana will present an innovative interpretation of womanhood through Odissi style, taking contemporary roles of women into account. The six facets of women incorporated in the performance include “Mohini”, “Mukti”, “Badhu”, “Janani”, “Kshyama” and “Samhara”.
Born and brought up at Balasore in Orissa, Alpana began her training in Odissi under the late Guru Deva Prasad Das and Guru Sudhakar Sahoo at the age of seven. She gained her “Nritya Shree” degree at the age of 13 and “Nritya Visharad” at the age of 19. She has enriched her Odissi style under Guru Hare Krishna Behera and performed Odissi dance solo in almost all major cities and cultural festivals of India, England and Japan.
Along with being a performer, she is also a teacher and has taught Odissi and several Indian folk dances in several cities of India.
