CPI favours separate Telangana state
Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD: The Communist Party of India and the CPI (Marxist) have taken diametrically opposite stands on the crucial issue of separate Statehood to Telangana region.
While the CPI (M) made its stand clear against smaller States, the CPI has expressed its support for the formation of separate Telangana. In its draft political resolution ahead of the party’s national conference in Hyderabad in March, the CPI acknowledged the sentiment for separate State prevailing in the region. Taking note of the growing demand, the party has announced its support to the formation of separate Telangana. This is a marked shift from the party’s earlier stand on the constitution of a committee of experts to assess the socio-economic and political situation in the region before taking a decision.
The CPI (M) is, however, firm that “there is a big danger” with smaller States and there was no confusion in the party’s stand on the issue.
