This Day That Age
“We are celebrating the progress of our institutions and important events of history, not merely because we want to express our sense of pride and glory in our achievements, but because they are really landmarks in the history of our progress, and are circulated to contribute to future advancement,” observed Dr. B. Ramakrishna Rao, Governor of Kerala, in Trivandrum on January 22, while inaugurating the centenary celebrations of the Trivandrum Museum and Zoo. The Governor also laid the foundation-stone of a new building for the Natural History Museum inside the zoo compound. Started in 1857 with a few specimens of rocks and some animals housed in a part of a Government bungalow, the zoo and the museum are now situated on a 64-acre plot with nearly 739 different species of animals and birds. Its attractiveness is increased by the beautiful parks and pathways and “true to nature” settings provided for the wild animals.
