Cinderella Man

Anil ‘Humble’ Kumble has often let his bowling do the talking. It was heartening to find an editorial in recognition of his reticent persona (“Cricket’s Cinderella Man,” Jan. 24). Particularly after the Sydney turmoil, when the media blew the issue out of proportion, Kumble maintained his calm and did not let his emotions interfere with his decision making. Team India should have availed itself of his leadership much earlier.

Kumble’s resilience is indeed awesome. On innumerable occasions his mind has triumphed over matter. The team’s victory against Australia in Perth speaks volumes about the Cinderella Man’s strong will and positive attitude, the two traits expected of a captain.

S. Ramakrishnasayee,

Ranipet
