On soul-searching

I disagree with the contents of the article “A little soul searching may not hurt” (Jan. 23). Our reaction to the despicable happenings at Sydney during the second Test match with Australia was absolutely justified. Kumble’s restrained, yet powerful, remark that only one team played in the right spirit of the game was a slap in the face of the Aussies. When decision after decision went against India, things were certainly going wrong. The issue was very serious and the BCCI’s reaction was justified.

The article attributes whatever happened after the Sydney match to media hype and the BCCI’s money power. The BCCI rightly voiced its protest because blatant umpiring errors and on-field behaviour of the Aussies were unacceptable. The match referee added fuel to the fire by imposing a three-match ban on Harbhajan Singh. While I admire the hard game played by the Aussies, I feel they win more by bullying (or sledging) than by their inherent skills.

K. Venkataramani,

Banglaore
