NEW DELHI: Grandmaster G.N. Gopal played way above his rating of 2528 to hold second-seeded Chinese Ni Hua, rated 2680, to provide the biggest surprise of the second round in the Gibtelecom Masters chess tournament at Gibraltar on Wednesday. Playing white, Gopal proved equal to Ni Hua in 31 moves after adopting the Tarrasch variation against the French Defence. D. Harika also came with a creditable draw when she came out undefeated against GM Vadim Malakhatko. Sandipan Chanda joined Gopal and Harika at 1.5 points after an expected victory. Earlier, Gopal, Harika and Aarthie Ramaswamy joined US GM Hikaru Nakamura as team members of Indian Defence and won the five-round Blitz Team event.
The results (involving Indians): Second round: G.N. Gopal (1.5) drew with Ni Hua (Chn, 1.5); Vadim Malakhatko (Bel, 1.5) drew with D. Harika (1.5); Sandipan Chanda (1.5) bt Alan Tate (Sco, 1). Aarthie Ramaswamy (0.5) bt Oystein Aagedal Skage (Nor, 1); N. Srinath (1) bt Adrian Mathews (Eng, 0.5); Kruttika Nadig (0.5) drew with Marius Lode (Nor, 1).
