CUTTACK: In a bizarre incident, police retrieved bodies of five members of a family comprising mother and four daughters from their house in Patasundarpur village under Cuttack Sadar police station, about 30 kms from here on Thursday morning. Police believe all the victims committed suicide consuming poison due to family disputes. According to police, disgusted with husband Kailash Sethi’s careless and slipshod attitude, his wife Kuni (48) and all their four daughters committed suicide last night by consuming an insecticide called “Thimate”, which is called Danadar in local parlance. The four daughters who also committed suicide along with their mother include Buli (23), Kali (18), Manu (13) and Ranu (5). “We have seized a bottle of insecticide from their house and sent the bodies for post mortem”, said the Cuttack rural SP Amitendranath Sinha. Police have also detained Kailash Sethy, the village washerman for quizzing. According to locals, Kailash was a drug addict and was not doing anything to eke out a living. He was completely dependant on the income of his wife and elder daughter who used to work as domestic helps. Kailash used to physically torture his wife and daughter and often snatch away money from them to meet his drug quota of the day”, villagers said. “Kailash had mercilessly beaten his wife and children three days ago and had deserted the house after throwing some eatables in the house”, said a villager. Police however, suspect that Kailash must have visited the house last night and picked up the quarrel following which the family members took the extreme step.
