VOICING THEIR DEMANDS: DSS activists staging a dharna in Mysore on Thursday seeking amenities for the residents of Ekalavya Nagar.

MYSORE: Activists of the Karnataka State Dalitha Sangharsha Samithi (DSS) staged a dharna in the city on Thursday urging the authorities to provide basic amenities to residents of Ekalavya Nagar.

They said that the residents, a majority of whom were nomadic tribal people now settled in Ekalavya Nagar, continued to live in poor conditions without access to pure drinking water.

The residents, living in abject poverty, had not been issued ration cards either, they said and placed a six-point charter of demands before the district administration.

The demands included resumption of drinking water supply to the area which was stopped last month due to a technical snag, distribution of possession certificates to the community members at Ekalavya Nagar and financial assistance to physically-challenged persons and widows.

It was pointed out that a majority of the residents of Ekalavya Nagar were talented artistes and hence they be given financial assistance and the colony renamed as Kalavidanagar.
