Effective suggestions: P.M. Rajagopal, AGM, Reserve Bank of India, addressing a security committee meeting at the Tuticorin Collectorate. Tuticorin: A meeting of District Level Security Committee (DLSC), which was recently constituted by the Reserve Bank of India in the district, held here on Wednesday evening discussed issues related to security of banking operations and methods to counter the menace of counterfeit notes. P.M. Rajagopal, Assistant General Manager (Issue Department), RBI, told the officials of various banks that the ‘central bank of the country’ would extend all infrastructure support towards dissemination of information on identification of counterfeit currency notes. The banks should immediately file a complaint with the District Crime Branch (DCB) whenever they detect counterfeit notes. Similarly, general public too should either inform the nearest bank or the DCB all information regarding counterfeit notes in circulation. Mr. Rajagopal said that two mega melas have been planned under the ‘Clean note policy’ of RBI at Kovilpatti and Vilathikulam in the district on February 16, to facilitate the public to exchange mutilated and soiled currencies. The melas would also be used to distribute coins in exchange of notes. While the campaign at Vilathikulam would be organised by State Bank of India, the mela at Kovilpatti would be conducted jointly by the SBI and the Indian Overseas Bank. “Our aim is to replace the entire soiled and mutilated currencies in circulation which were found not conducive for new technologies such as dispensing machines, automatic teller machines and counting machines,” he said. He directed the banks to display notices in all branches to disseminate information to the public that ‘soiled notes’ could be exchanged in any of the financial institutions recognised by the RBI. Besides, the notes should display the message that ‘cut notes’ could be exchanged in any of the ‘currency chest branches’. State Bank of India branches at Tuticorin, Tiruchnedur, Srivaikundam, Vilathikulam, Kovilpatti, Indian Overseas Bank, Kovilpatti, Canara Bank, Tuticorin, possessed currency chest facilities. Collector R. Palaniayndi, chairman of the committee, then reviewed the security of branches having ‘currency chest’, movement of currency and overall currency management in the district. N. Thiyaharajan, Assistant General Manager, Lead Bank ( SBI), was present.
