Pudukottai gearing up for job scheme

The district receives above-normal rainfall

PUDUKOTTAI: The district administration is gearing up for the implementation of National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (NREGP) with effect from the next financial year, the District Collector, D. Uthirakkumaran, said.
Presiding over a Farmers’ Grievance Day meeting here on Friday, the Collector said that every rural labourer aged above 18 years would get an assured job for a period of at least 100 days.
Pointing out that the objective of the programme was to improve the economic status of the rural poor, he appealed to the farmers’ representatives to popularise the benefits of the scheme.
On the realisation of water during the North-east monsoon, the Collector said that the district registered a total rainfall level of 53.1 cm during the monsoon, as against the normal 40.3 cm. Itwould benefit farmers taking up summer cultivation during this year.
Re-organisation
Explaining the re-organisation of the Agriculture Department, the Collector said that all the taluk-level offices of the Assistant Director of Agriculture have been wound up. Instead, block level offices of Assistant Director of Agriculture and Assistant Director of Horticulture had been opened in every block in the district. The re-organisation, he said, would facilitate the farmers with easy and immediate access to the Agriculture and Horticulture officials for ensuring proper crop protection and cultivation practices.
Farmers pleaded for compensation to paddy-growers whose crop had been damaged by pest attack.
