Documenting stories: ‘In Search of Gandhi’ traces the famous trail of Gandhiji’s salt march.

Bangalore: If you believe that Republic Day is an occasion for not only celebration but also reflection on the nation’s successes and failures, here are films to watch out for.

Pedestrian Pictures, a media activist group, is screening two films — “In Search of Gandhi” by Lalit Vachani and “Freedom…!” by Amar Kanwar — on the occasion of Republic Day. The screening will be followed by a discussion chaired by G. Ramakrishna, Editor of Hosathu magazine.

The films reflect on how the face of the Indian State has been changing in the context of globalisation, marginalising the constitutional rights of vast sections of Indians.

“In Search of Gandhi”, made in a road-movie style, has the film crew travelling down the famous trail of Gandhiji’s salt march, the mass campaign that galvanised thousands of Indians to join the non-violent struggle for freedom. Stopping at the same villages and cities, where Gandhiji and his followers had raised their call for independence, the film documents the stories of ordinary citizens in India today. The film is a search for the present and future of democracy in India.

“Freedom…!” is a film on working people resisting onslaught on their livelihood. It looks at a number of people’s struggles in India, from the anti-mining tribal resistance in Kashipur and Gandhamardan in Orissa and the mass movements in Chattisgarh to the coastal communities’ struggle against big ports and industrial parks in Kutch and Umbergaon.

The screening is between 5 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. on Saturday at the Institution of Agricultural Technologists, Queen’s Road. For details, call 9448367627 or 9448041063.
