Sugarcane growers seek better price
Staff Reporter
PUDUKOTTAI: The Tamil Nadu Sugarcane Growers’ Association, affiliated to the Communist Party of India (Marxist), has urged the State Government to impress upon the Central Government to amend the Sugarcane Control Act to benefit sugarcane cultivators.
In a statement issued here on Thursday, the State vice-president of the Association, N. Jeevakarunyam said that as per provisions of the Act, procurement price was being fixed based on profitability from sugar production only, without any computation for the byproducts of sugarcane such as ethanol and profit earned through setting up of co-generation unit.
He said that the statutory minimum price and State-advised price, totalling Rs.1,035 a tonne, was not attractive for farmers, as production cost had increased manifold.
The price announced by the State government was far from satisfactory, he said urging Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to intervene in the issue. The delay in the issue of cutting orders and the mounting arrears from factories overburdened sugarcane growers’ financial crisis on a sustained basis.
