Plan is to cover 70 lakh rural population

MADURAI: A State-level Village Health Information Survey is in progress under the aegis of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) to prepare a ‘health plan’ by gathering details through a household exercise covering 15 per cent of the rural population.
The sample survey, dealing with vital information on health, food habits and lifestyle, among other things, would reach out to at least 14 lakh houses in rural areas surveying about 70 lakh population, senior Health Department officials here told The Hindu on Thursday.
Objective
While the survey is confined to rural areas, the objective is to elicit specific information/trends to improve the public health parameters, according to A. Palanichamy, Deputy-Director of Health Services.
The survey is being done with the help of members of self-help groups, Village Sanitation Committees, non-governmental organisations and anganwadis under the supervision of Health Department staff.
Training is being imparted to medical officers of Primary Health Centres on how to carry out the survey that is expected to be completed by February 5.
Dr. Palanichamy said that already a State-level orientation to all district officials was given in Chennai under the supervision of Selvi Apoorva, NRHM Mission Director (Tamil Nadu), where the methodology of cluster survey in village and town panchayats was explained.
Basic household data
Giving details about the questionnaire, V. Soundararajan, Assistant Director, State Bureau of Health Intelligence, said that it was an exhaustive survey that collected all basic household data apart from the facilities available in villages.
Family health details, children’s immunisation, food habits, family expenses on health, diseases (if any) for family members are among the questions that figure in the 50-odd queries.
According to Dr. Palanichamy, the sample survey will be the basis for intervention by the government to improve village health amenities.
