DMK, AIADMK members indulge in verbal duel

Special Correspondent

Trouble sparked off by ruling party member’s charge

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Assembly on Thursday witnessed heated exchanges between ruling party and opposition MLAs.

Trouble began when a ruling party MLA, T. Sengottuvan, during the discussion on the motion of thanks to the Governor’s address said that the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam had no locus standi to criticise the government on law and order. It was when the AIADMK was in power that three girl students were charred to death in the bus burning incident at Dharmapuri.

This sparked off protests from the AIADMK members. Party’s whip K.A. Sengottaiyan said it was not proper for the member to raise the issue when a case was pending in the Supreme Court.

Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy defended his party member, saying Mr. Sengottuvan had mentioned the incident only to substantiate his charge.

AIADMK MLAs countered his argument asking whether the Assembly would allow them to mention the attack on the Dinakaran office in Madurai, in which three persons died.

Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veeraswami pointed out that after the incident, the Chief Minister had asked the Centre to order a CBI enquiry

More trouble

The DMK and the AIADMK MLAs indulged in a verbal battle again at the fag end of the session when V.P Kalairajan (AIADMK) criticised Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin for not visiting flood-affected districts immediately after the disaster. Ruling party members protested.

Mr. Veeraswami said there was no truth in the charge as both the Chief Minister and the Local Administration Minister visited the affected areas immediately after the incident. Congress MLA C. Gnanasekaran blamed the State intelligence machinery for its failure to track the movement of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam cadres in Tamil Nadu. In the last one and a half years, 102 cadres were arrested and cases under the National Security Act registered against 40.

He wanted the Government to gear up the intelligence machinery so that the LTTE cadres did not have a free run. He also wanted the State to take steps to extradite LTTE chief V. Prabakaran, a proclaimed offender in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

He regretted that some political parties and organisations in the State were openly supporting the LTEE without knowing the consequences. The State should prevent smuggling of arms to the LTTE from Tamil Nadu.

Replying to Mr. Gnanasekaran’s claim that cement was cheaper in Andhra Pradesh than in Tamil Nadu, Mr. Veeraswami said nowhere in the country was it being sold at less than Rs.260 a bag. The price in Tamil Nadu was cheaper compared to other States.
