NEW DELHI: The National Human Rights Commission has issued notice to the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Eluru on a complaint alleging kidnap of a woman and her two children with police help on December 15, 2007. Acting on a complaint from Chairperson of Guild of Service, Mohini Giri, the Commission granted six weeks to the police for filing the response. Dr. Giri, in her complaint, said that this case was referred to the Family Counselling Centre. Sivalinga Lakshmi (37) and her children aged 7 and 4 years living in Durga Nagar, Madhurvada, Visakhapatnam, were kidnapped by a group of persons who came in a fleet of cars, accompanied by police, she said. They were kept in Mandapeta jail for two nights and abused without informing the Visakhapatnam police. The victims were tortured and asked to sign some documents. Subsequently, they were released and told that the reason for their arrest was that the woman stole a cow in Ravulapalem, 130 km away from Visakhapatnam. Her husband was not informed of his wife’s condition during the two days. Compensation soughtDr. Giri said, “this is a gross violation of human rights.” The complainant urged the Commission to take strict action against the officials concerned and order protection to the victim and award compensation for the abuse and torture.
