GMR Group wins bid for Delhi team

HYDERABAD: The GMR Group, builders of the nation’s first green field airport, has won the intensely contested bid for sponsorship of the Delhi team in the Indian Premier League, slated to get underway in April.

The Bangalore based group made the bid valued at US $84 million that roughly translates to Rs. 336 crore.

Commenting on the move, Dr. Vijay Vancheswar, the group’s spokesman, said: “This will help us be associated with the game all Indians love, which will be a good branding vehicle for the group. This will be more so in Delhi, where we are building the world class airport, to be commissioned in time for the Commonwealth games in 2010.”

Each of the winning bidders will have rights over local sponsorship, ticket receipts and audience merchandising.

Each team will have 16 national and international players. To promote cricketing talent at the grassroot level each of the teams would be required to have at least four cricketers under 21 years of age and four from the respective domestic zones or from across the country, Dr.Vancheswar added. — Special Correspondent
