Krishnagiri: Employees of banks went on a nationwide strike on Friday in protest against the merger of banks, affecting banking operations in Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts. Members of the All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA), All India Bank Officers Association (AIBOA) and Bank Employees Federation of India (BEFI) took part in the strike

Employees staged a demonstration in Dharmapuri under the banner of United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) to press their demands. They claimed that merger of banks would lead to reduction of number of branches and employees.

The move would affect the banking service to the rural areas.

They demanded the government to extend pension benefits to all the employees and provide employment to the heir of deceased employees on compassionate grounds.

Employees wanted the bank managements to fill up all the vacancies in the banks and stop outsourcing banking jobs and services. The outsourcing of jobs would lead to irregularities in the functioning of banks, they pointed out.

They demanded the early settlement on wage revision. The UFBU threatened to go on an indefinite strike in March if its demands were not fulfilled.

A. Kaliullah, district president of All India Bank Employees Association, Dharmapuri, led the demonstration.
