COLOMBO: The Sri Lankan military on Friday claimed to have inflicted heavy damages on the LTTE in ground fighting and aerial raids on “identified” targets in the north amid pitched battles along the Forward Defence Lines (FDLs). The Defence Ministry said naval troops in a “special operation” destroyed an LTTE hide-out in the Peraru Jungles and recovered a large cache of arms and ammunition. “The LTTE hide-out, located 6 km west of Nilaweli had been frequented by the LTTE cadres hiding in the jungle. Around 50 LTTE cadres who fled Thoppigala are suspected to be trapped in the Peraru Jungles.” Separately, infantrymen continued their “thrust” into the LTTE dominated areas in the south of Adampan and heavy clashes were reported at a bunker defence manned by LTTE. The Ministry claimed that troops had destroyed seven LTTE bunkers killing at least nine cadres. In a statement posted on its website, the LTTE alleged that the Air Force bombed a civilian settlement near Kilinochchi town on Friday killing a civilian.
