A novel venture

The Tata Tea Arsenal Soccer Stars football tournament, set to kick off at the Bangalore Football Stadium, is different.

The inter-school tournament is a venture in association with the Karnataka State Football Association (KSFA) and Bangalore District Football Association (BDFA) for under-15 years and will be played in a seven-a-side format for 14 minutes duration.

Two matches will be played simultaneously with the 48 teams (not registered) divided into 16 pools. The top team in each pool qualifies for the knockout phase to be played on Monday (January 28).

The event is being held at nine centres — Kolkata, Goa, Chandigarh, Delhi, Mumbai, Kozhikode, Bhuvaneshwar and Shillong, besides Bangalore. The top two teams from each centre — except Bhuvaneshwar and Shillong, which will have only one team — will play the title rounds in Kolkata on May 9 and 10.

Jamshed Nassiri and Premnath Philip, two former internationals and the brains behind this venture, said the ultimate aim of this concept was to identify about 30 youngsters in the age group and provide them with state-of-the-art training facilities in coordination with Arsenal Football Club, from June this year. High Life Management group is the event manager.

HASC in last four

HASC and JFJ Sports Club shared two goals and points and fittingly made it to the last four of the Veterans football tournament at the football stadium here on Friday.

JFJ took the lead through Peter in the eighth minute following a penalty but Manivannan made sure that HASC share points with a 33rd minute equaliser.

In another match, Bangalore Veterans (Austin Town) downed Benson Town SC, thanks to a 36th minute strike by Palani. In the semis, ITI SC meets JFJ SC while HASC plays Periyarnagar SC in the morning before the 2 p.m. final.

In the C Division league encounter at the Austin Town ground, New Lucky Star and Young Muslims played out a goalless draw.
