Letters to the Editor
While Egypt’s decision to allow Palestinians to enter its territory by breaching its wall with the Gaza Strip to buy essential commodities is welcome, Israel’s threat that it will cut off humanitarian supplies to the residents of Gaza is highly condemnable. Israel has forcibly occupied land that belongs to Palestinians. Its act of imposing blockades on helpless people is unacceptable. If the issue is terrorism, what about the massacre of 50 worshippers in the Ibrahimi Mosque at al-Khalil in 1994, and missile attacks on Palestinians? Aren’t Palestinians too victims of terrorism? M. Mohamed Rafiq, Tiruchi Guns and bombs are never scarce in a battlefield, but food can be dangerously so. For the Palestinians living in Gaza, the wall bordering Egypt stood between life and death. It is unrealistic to expect anything to deter a people trying to procure food. The breaching of the wall is only one fallout of the Israeli blockade. The larger message is the need to revive the peace process. J.S. Acharya, Hyderabad Israeli blockade of Gaza means slow death for the people. Israel may find that giving the Palestinians their freedom and allowing them the dignity of self-determination in their own land might be far more effective in bringing about a peaceful solution than all the bloodshed and misery. Without a political solution that includes Gaza in negotiations to settle the wrongs done to the Palestinians, a just peace for Palestinians and Israelis is as remote as ever. Md Ziyaullah Khan, Pune
